Creation date: 1902

Distance from Edinburgh: 160 km

This famous course regularly plays host to the British Open and will host the Open again in July 2009. This is a really big test for Golfers with spectacular holes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Like St Andrews, Turnberry is ranked in the top 10 of the best golf courses in the world, which shows the scope of this incredible place. Probably the most scenic golf course in the whole of Scotland, it has to be experience at least once in a lifetime. There is a second course available called the Kintyre which beautifully complements the Ailsa course.

World ranking: 63
Scottish ranking: 8
Number of British Open:
8
Architect: George Strath, Willie Fernie and James Braid
Creation date: 1878
Par: 71
Distance from St Andrews: 195 km
Distance from Edinburgh: 135 km
Distance from Glasgow: 55 km
Distance from Inverness: 330 km

Founded in 1878, this course is a little jewel on the coast located in the town of Troon. The course has staged many British Opens. The back nine is one of the most difficult in the world of Golf and provides terrific “suspense” when the open is hosted in Troon. Hole number 8, a par 3 called the “postage stamp”, is famous, and as its name suggests, it is very small and difficult to hit, especially when the wind is high. Two more golf courses are available at Troon Golf Club. The Portland course which is a links course, and Craigend course which is a par 3 course.

Prestwick

Scottish ranking: 15
Number of British Open:
15
Architect: Old Tom Morris
Creation date: 1851
Par: 71
Distance from St Andrews: 195 km
Distance from Edinburgh: 135 km
Distance from Glasgow: 55 km
Distance from Inverness: 330 km

This course, founded in 1851, is full of history, maybe because it was the first course to host the British Open in 1860. It was a 12 hole course instead of a 18 hole golf course. At this time the Open was played over 36 holes (3 times 12 holes). The trophy was a belt with red leather before becoming the famous “claret jug”. This is a lovely links course with lots of charm. A reel fun links course to play with lots of bumps. The 17th is the signature hole with its gigantic bunker. For information, both jacket and tie must be worn if you want to have the chance to enjoy a drink at the 19th hole.

Glasgow Gailes

Scottish ranking: 43
Architect: Willie Park Junior & Old Tom Morris
Creation date: 1787
Par: 71
Distance from St Andrews: 185 km
Distance from Edinburgh: 130 km
Distance from Glasgow: 50 km
Distance from Inverness: 325 km

Founded in 1787 Glasgow Gailes is the 9th oldest golf course in the world. It is a manicured parkland course which follows the original line of play to the green-sites laid out by Old Tom Morris in December 1903. The course has hosted many prestigious events over the years. This is an excellent links course with undulating fairways and quality greens providing a very good challenge for good and less experienced golfers.

Royal Troon (Portland)

Founded in 1896, the Portland Course is a fine links course which is, unfortunately, totally overshadowed by the Championship Course.
