The world famous golf course is a classic links course. Here Golf began 600 years ago, on public land, to which everyone can have access.

In the top 5 of the best courses in the world, the Old course is totally unique for two reasons; firstly because of its long history and secondly because golfers have to play certain shots here that they will play nowhere else, (for example, a 60 metres putt!).

The name of the architect is unknown but mother-nature has shaped this magnificent piece of land over the centuries, like most Scottish golf courses.

The land is flat and has gigantic greens, with seven greens shared between two holes each.

The course is also characterised by shared fairways, 112 Scottish deep bunkers and many “blind” shots.

At only 6,041 yards (from the championship tees), the Old course is not an easy course, especially when the wind decides to become part of the game.

You will enjoy certain special parts of the course such as the “hell bunker”, the “road hole”, the “swilican bridge”, and the opportunity to start and finish your round in town.

Architect: Tom Kidd
Creation date: 2008
Par: 71
Distance from Edinburgh: 80km
Distance from Glasgow: 130km
Distance from Inverness: 235km
Distance from Aberdeen 130km

This is the new golf course, opened in 2008, at the home of golf and run by the municipal Links trust, which is in charge of the other golf courses in town.

People call it The Castle course or number 7. Located in the South part of the town, on a cliff, the course offers spectacular views of the sea and on the old town of St Andrews.

Spey Valley

Scottish ranking: 24
Architect: Dave Thomas
Creation date: 2006
Par: 72
Distance from St Andrews: 195 km
Distance from Edinburgh: 315 km
Distance from Glasgow: 355 km
Distance from Inverness: 75 km
Coming from St Andrews, on the way to Championship courses such as Royal Dornoch and Nairn, it is worth a stop in Aviemore, in the heart of the magnificent Cairngorm national park, where the Spey Valley Golf Club is located.
All the connoisseurs of the game will tell you that Spey Valley is the best new Golf course in Scotland.
With almost 7,200 yards from the back tees, this wonderful course has a tremendous lay- out with the most breathtaking views in Scotland.
Before you play, do not forget to ask the staff, how to play the 5th….the longest hole in Scotland.

Brora

Our rating:

Scottish ranking: 31
Architect: James Braid
Creation date: 1923
Par: 69
Distance from St Andrews: 330 km
Distance from Edinburgh: 335 km
Distance from Glasgow: 375 km
Distance from Inverness: 105 km

Golf in Brora has been played since 1891. It is a pure traditional links course designed by James Braid, where little has changed since he left in 1923.
It’s a relatively easy course, with no wind, but to be honest the real challenge is to play this course with the wind, it makes it much more interesting.
The golf course has two main characteristics, the first one is that you will not find any markers to help you to judge distances and the second is that most of the green-keepers are sheep and cows, which is why you will find electric fences all around the greens. A great golf experience.
